Mabel the Rescue Dog

Hi everyone, it’s Mabel! I hope everyone had a fun New Year’s celebration. For many, starting the new year is exciting and full of positivity. But unfortunately, we started off the new year with some upsetting news: Dimitri was getting returned.

Molly was devastated when she first heard the news. After fostering 23 dogs, she had never had one returned until this moment. At our rescue, the foster parents are in charge of meeting with applicants and deciding if they’re a good fit or not. So, Molly feels like it’s partially her fault (even though many dog lovers have assured her that’s not true). And she feels even worse because Dimitri had a different foster family for the first few weeks at the rescue, so she feels like she let them down too.

For those of you who don’t know who Dimitri is, he’s a 6-year-old Pomeranian/Husky mix that was rescued from a puppy mill. Molly adored him from the moment she met him, especially since she has a soft spot for puppy mill survivors. He was quickly adopted by a woman who Molly had a good feeling about, and he lived with her for two months before he was returned.

Now, before you make any assumptions, I want to make it clear that Molly is not mad at the lady who returned Dimitri. She had some personal stuff going on and she felt that she couldn’t provide him with the care he needed. Upon returning him, she was sobbing, so this was clearly not an easy decision for her. Seeing dogs get returned is always sad for the rescue, but most volunteers are very understanding. It’s clear that Dimitri’s adopter made her decision out of love. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case with returns (such as someone returning a senior dog to make room for a Christmas puppy – it sadly happens more than you’d think).

Luckily, Molly had some time to mentally process the return before she had to pick Dimitri up. When she saw him in person, she still felt bad, but most of her sadness was replaced with joy and hope. She was determined to help him find another great home because he’s a sweet dog who deserves it. He acted incredibly excited when he saw her, which helped her worries fade away. For some reason, Dimitri has always adored and trusted Molly more than most humans (she’s my human, so I get what he sees in her).

So far, Dimitri has done really well at our home the second time around. I’m not happy that Molly pays so much attention to him, but I’m glad she’s helping him (even if I don’t act like it). Molly had been worried that he would be anxious having to move to a new location again, but he hasn’t showed any signs of stress. He has made himself right at home as if no time has passed since the last time we saw him. Hopefully, he’ll find his real forever home soon!
